Frequently Asked Questions

Why did you choose Osteopathic Manipulation (OMT)?

Dr. Cox had the opportunity to see OMT used in a clinical setting during his third year of medical school. He became passionate about OMT after observing how it could improve a patient's overall quality of life.

What does OMT treat?

OMT can treat a wide range of medical issues. To learn more about OMT and what it can treat, please visit our about page.

Is OMT right for me?

Dr. Cox can not guarantee any results for your specific medical condition. However if OMT is not improving your medical condition or OMT is not medically appropriate, Dr. Cox will consult with you to discuss next steps. These could include injections, medications, home exercises, therapy, or a referral to a different medical provider.

How many treatments will I need?

Each patient and each medical condition will have different OMT needs. Some patients benefit from regular treatments and others only need one treatment. During your first appointment, you can ask Dr. Cox to discuss your specific medical situation.

Is OMT painful?

OMT is generally gentle and not painful. For some patients OMT is uncomfortable, but the discomfort does not last. You can expect to feel sore the next day (similar to what you'd feel after light exercise). To lessen the symptoms, please drink plenty of water the days after your appointment.

What can I expect from my appointment?

During your first appointment, Dr. Cox will perform a physical evaluation and ask what you are being seen for. If medically appropriate, Dr. Cox will perform OMT at your first appointment. Your first appointment will be approximately 35-40 minutes. Follow up appointments will be approximately 20-25 minutes. Longer follow up appointments may be available for some more medically complex patients.

Is OMT safe?

Yes, OMT is considered safe when performed by a qualified Osteopathic Physician, which Dr. Cox is. However, certain medical conditions may mean that OMT is not medically appropriate. If Dr. Cox feels that OMT is not appropriate for you, he will discuss alternative options with you.

Is OMT safe for infants and children?

Yes, Dr. Cox treated all 3 of his children within the first hour of them being born. OMT has been shown to improve feeding difficulties, birth related muscle issues, colic, sleep irregularities and several other medical conditions for infants and children.

Is OMT safe during pregancy?

Yes, OMT is gentle and safe during pregnancy. OMT has been shown to relieve pregnancy related pain as well as prepare the body for labor. Dr. Cox recommends pregnant patients be seen approximately once a month until the third trimester and then every 2-3 weeks. Dr. Cox recommends an additional treatment approximately 6-8 weeks after delivery.

Can OMT replace medication or surgery?

Each patient's medical needs are unique and therefore Dr. Cox can not guarantee that he will be able to prevent surgery or reduce your medications. OMT has been shown to reduce pain, improve function, and support recovery from illness and injury.
